Celebrating the Erie Canal
We took part in Tow Path Day along the Camillus section of the Erie Canal. A chance to celebrate and explore the history of the canal. The "tow paths" were where the mules would pull the boats down the canals.
We enjoyed music during lunch.
Lunch which featured salt potatoes-- a Syracuse summer meal standard.
Painted rocks.
Built bird houses.
Met baby goats-- fell in LOVE with them actually.
Met a very fancy and dressed up pig-- who owns several hats and a tiara.
Went down the canal on a replica boat.
Learned to spin wool into yarn.
It was a fantastic day and as homeschoolers, it was part of our ongoing study of the Erie Canal and Early American history. Yes, this took place on a Saturday--in the summer, and the kids learned quite a bit. We dont limit learning to specific days or months, and they are engaged in the learning as it arises.

Perspective
Instead of seeing the disease that has been destroying my Black Eyed Susans' leaves, I notice how they stand tall in the sunlight and almost glow.
I don't see the overgrown weeds in my garden, I see the beauty hidden within.
I see how the Blue Spruce needles glisten in the sun.
I look past the damage done by the Japanese Beetles and see the sun shimmer through the leaves of the White Birch tree.
I see the Lavender flowers at sunset as their perfume fills the air and think it doesnt get better than this.
I could dwell on the negative, there is plenty of it out there. I could ignore the beautiful images above and focus soley on the disease, the damage, and the mess. But where would that leave me? And what would I have to offer?
I find that even when I do find myself in a bad mood, surrounded by what I don't want to see; if I grab my camera-- it refocuses my eye. It brings me back to the positivity and recharges me almost instantly.
I challenge you too to look for that hidden beauty even when it is so much easier to see all that is not. Find it and enjoy it, even if only for a moment.

Tuesdays Unwrapped: Simple Gifts
Today for my Tuesday Unwrapped I am unwrapping these simple gifts from my garden last evening. 
I never grew potatoes before so uncovering them and finding them tucked into the ground like a small secret treasure was a joy.
As I pulled the carrots from the ground the sun was setting over my shoulder. It was a beautiful evening.

Sesame Place
If you are in the northeast you must take a trip to Sesame Place. Its just outside of Philadelphia and is so much fun. This was our second water park this summer and so far--the BEST!
